Are you confident, adaptable and interested in gaining valuable experience within a secondary school?

Teaching Personnel is recruiting enthusiastic and reliable Cover Supervisors to work across welcoming secondary schools throughout Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire from September 2026.

This is a flexible opportunity that can fit around your availability, whether you are looking for regular work each week or occasional days to build your classroom experience.

The role is particularly suitable for graduates considering a career in teaching, sports coaches, youth workers, support workers, trainee teachers and experienced Cover Supervisors. Applications are also welcomed from Qualified Teachers looking for flexible work without the planning and marking responsibilities of a full teaching role.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will supervise classes when the usual teacher is absent. Work will already be prepared, and your main responsibility will be to ensure pupils remain focused, behave appropriately and complete the activities set by their teacher.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering pre-prepared lesson activities across a variety of subjects.
  • Supervising pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Providing clear instructions and keeping pupils focused on their work.
  • Managing classroom behaviour positively and consistently.
  • Responding to questions and supporting pupils where appropriate.
  • Following the school's behaviour, safeguarding and attendance procedures.
  • Providing feedback to the teacher about the lesson and any concerns.
  • Adapting confidently to different year groups, subjects and school environments.

You will not usually be required to plan lessons or complete marking.

Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor is not essential.

Teaching Personnel offers an in-person Cover Supervisor course designed to upskill and prepare you for the role. The course will help you understand:

  • The responsibilities of a Cover Supervisor.
  • How to manage classroom behaviour confidently.
  • How to deliver pre-prepared lesson activities.
  • How to respond to common situations within the classroom.
  • School safeguarding procedures and professional expectations.
  • Practical strategies for building confidence in front of a class.

Following the course, we can support you in finding suitable Cover Supervisor opportunities within local secondary schools.

We would love to hear from you if you:

  • Have experience working with children or young people.
  • Are confident communicating with groups.
  • Can manage behaviour calmly and professionally.
  • Are organised, reliable and adaptable.
  • Are comfortable supervising a range of secondary school subjects.
  • Can accept scheduled work or occasional last-minute bookings.
  • Are passionate about supporting young people in education.

Relevant experience could come from schools, sports coaching, tutoring, youth work, care, mentoring, community work or other positions involving children and young people.

  • Competitive pay of £110-£150 per day, dependent on experience.
  • Weekly pay through PAYE.
  • Access to our in-person Cover Supervisor course.
  • Flexible work that fits around your availability.
  • Day-to-day and short-term opportunities close to home.
